The BJP members in
Lok Sabha on Tuesday demanded a "high-level" probe into
Saturday's incident at the Jawaharlal Nehru University when two
Army officers were badly beaten up by the students after they
protested against "anti-India" poems of Pakistani poets
at a mushaira.
As the Leader of the
Opposition, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, looked on expressionless, the BJP
members had a field day hurling allegations without a murmur of
protest from either the Congress or the Left members. "ISI
agents were behind the attack," said Mr Sahib Singh Varma,
when the issue was raised by Maj. Gen. Khanduri (Retd.) during the
Zero Hour.
Gen. Khanduri said:
"Hooligans in JNU started beating up the Army officers when
they protested against anti-Indian statements made by the
Pakistani poets." One of the Army officers, he said, was a:
Kargil hero but no one was willing to give them a hearing.
They were instead
beaten up "mercilessly." "On the one hand we talk
of nationalism and respect for the armed forces and on the other
mercilessly beat them up," remarked the BJP MP.
He expressed
suspicion at the idea of holding a mushaira at a university. Gen.
Khanduri said soon after the attack on the two Army officers, the
news was telecast on Pakistan Television. "Was it planned?
Was it deliberate?" asked Gen. Khanduri.
Demanding a
high-level probe, Gen. Khanduri wondered why was a night-long
mushaira held? "Who paid lakhs for it?" Just then Mr
Sahib Singh Varma stood up. As Gen. Khanduri kept insisting on a
probe, Mumbai MP Kirit Somaiyya got up to speak. "Look at the
manner in which the Army officers were attacked," he said.
Bihar MP Rajiv
Pratap Rudy smirked, "Have you ever heard of a mushaira in a
university?" He was supported by the other BJP members. While
all this was on, there was not a murmur of protest from the
Opposition members. Mrs Gandhi sat motionless, her deputy, Mr
Madhavrao Scindia, did not say a word. The Left MPs had nothing to
say. No one questioned the allegations made by the BJP members.
